Ruddigore at West Road

posted 13 Jan 2018, 05:01 by Jonatan Rostén   [ updated 13 Jan 2018, 05:09 by Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society ]

Will Robin escape his family’s curse? Or will his ghostly ancestors keep him from his love? Find out as CUG&S brings the spooktacular comic opera Ruddigore to West Road Concert Hall this February.

Visit the show website at http://ruddigore.co.uk or book tickets at https://adcticketing.com/ruddigore!

A terrible curse condemns each Baronet of Ruddigore to commit one dastardly crime per day or perish in inconceivable agony. Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, 22nd Baronet, has gone into hiding to avoid the curse and now lives in a Cornish fishing village where, disguised as the young farmer Robin Oakapple, he has fallen in love with the fair Rose Maybud. His prospects are ruined when his foster brother Dick Dauntless betrays him to Sir Despard Murgatroyd, the acting baronet. Ruthven is forced to take on both the baronetcy and its curse, enforced by an entire portrait gallery of his ghostly ancestors.

Ruddigore is a hilarious operatic satire of Victorian melodrama. Despite the sinister backdrop, you’ll find all the laughs and silliness you’d expect from G&S, combined with some of Sullivan’s most majestic music.

Sister Abigail

posted 29 Apr 2016, 08:16 by Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society

Sister Abigail (Week 4, 18th-21st May, ADC Late Show) is looking for chorus members and orchestral players!

This irreverent new comic opera tells the story of sisters Caroline and Abigail - one a Princess, the other a novice. An official visit causes their paths to cross, just as Abigail and her fellow novices resolve to escape the cloister and return to their former lives. With melodies merry and melancholy, and an all-female cast, Sister Abigail is the best opera about two nuns in a bath you will ever see!

The orchestra will require relatively low rehearsal commitment (one two hour call and a dress rehearsal on the 11th May), and is currently in need of strings, wind and brass.

Contact the Musical Director, James, on jwm51@cam.ac.uk with your name and instrument or voice part.
